Banana – Banana is one of the best ingredients you can use when it comes to making healthy juice drinks. Packed with stuff that is good for you it includes potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, folic acid, vitamin C and Beta-carotene as well as zinc, iron and loads of B vitamins. The health benefits of bananas are massive and it is an ideal energy booster and the perfect fruit for meals on the run. It is also the perfect mixer to be added together with berries and other such as ingredients.

Beetroot – Beetroot is a superfood that contains an incredible selection of goodness. It is filled with folate, soluble fibre and folic acid amongst other things and has too many health benefits to be listed but includes being an invaluable juice for pregnant women since it offers high levels of folate which reduces the chances of spina bifida in unborn children.

Blackberry – Blackberries are available for cheap (if not free) everywhere and are a superfood to rival the more trendy blueberries. They are stuffed with beta-carotene, vitamin E, vitamin C, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium and sodium. They work as a powerful antioxidant and the perfect mixing juice, they are extremely beneficial to the immune system and they contain very real anti-aging properties.

Carbs have always been considered as an adversary for weight loss. And weight watchers and body builders all across the world have been seen to shun carbohydrates when they are in a desperate need to shed weight fast and quick. True, but before we embark on a discussion on how to lose weight with no carbs, we must attempt to understand what a no carb diet means in the first place.

A very close contender to its next door neighbor, low carb diet, a no carb diet unlike the latter does not attempt to limit the carb intake. Rather, it removes every trace of carbohydrate from the meal plans that are followed throughout the day. Ketogenic in essence, it uses fat as the primary source of energy and protein, as the secondary. This diet is devised to assist the body in burning fat as a fuel for energy.

Carbohydrates contain complex sugars that are mainly found in plant based foods like fruits and veggies and also bread and pasta. So naturally a no carb diet says no to all these, and can only work for you if you are a non-vegetarian. This is a meat-based diet with high amounts of fat/protein and must not be followed without your doctor’s advice. This diet is not recommended for pregnant women, lactating mothers, elderly people, and individuals who have cardiovascular and kidney diseases.

You can definitely lose weight with no carbs. With a high protein diet, you don’t need to ask yourself how to lose stubborn belly fat anymore and finally realize your objective of how to have a flat stomach. There are definite steps to follow if you really want to lose weight with a no-carb diet-

Consult your doctor before you start on a no-carb diet.

Learn about carbs and cut them back from your meal plans. Veggies, fruits, grains, sugar, dairy products, legumes, alcohol – no place for any of these.

Stock up your refrigerator with protein/fat choices like fish, meat (preferably lean), poultry, and eggs. Use butter or regular cooking oil for rustling up your meals.

Since you are cutting down on veggies and fruit fibers, constipation can be a natural outcome. Drink plenty of water to prevent that.

If you can’t avoid dining out, order for dishes like grilled chicken or chicken breast roast in such occasions. Skip the rest. Cheating on your menu plan, even once, is going to hamper the ketosis process and make you put on weight.

Now that you know how to lose weight with no carbs, keep two important things in mind –

This diet is fit for short-term dieting

Even if this diet does not restrict portion sizes, do not overindulge. Eat when hungry and stop when you are full.

We all have our favorite foods and cravings like chocolate, pies, tarts, biscuits, donuts, waffles, cakes, nuggets, french fries, hotdogs, pizza and so on. But usually, eating too much of the good stuff won’t do any good to your waistline. Some people on their quest for the holy grail of weight loss and how to lose visceral fat often make the mistake of thinking all calories are created equal. Hence they will simply stick to their favorite junk foods but reduce the amount thinking they are on a diet. But that’s not a good idea because the truth is all calories are not created equal. Here is a breakdown of calories:

Calories from 1 gram of fat – 9
Calories from 1 gram of protein – 4
Calories from 1 gram of carbohydrates – 4
Calories from 1 gram of alcohol – 7

As you can see, fat has more calories than other nutrients. So if you were to stick to your favorite food diet or calorie laden foods usually loaded with either too much saturated fats, refined flour, sugar, sodium or empty calories like beer, you’ll be adding more calories to your nutrition. On the other hand, if you were to eat the same amount of calories but deriving from other food items which are more nutritious, you can see that all calories are not created equal here. Calories coming mostly from saturated fats, refined flour, sugar and sodium are not proper nutrition whereas calories coming from protein and complex carbs are way more nourishing, filling and more healthy. That’s not to say all fats are bad. Saturated fats like animal fats are usually bad whereas unsaturated fats like olive oil for instance are not and should be included in your diet.

The choice of foods you make are fundamental if you want to lose weight. Some foods are less calorie dense and have fat-burning properties as well. Such foods include but not limited to:

Fish – cod, tuna, salmon, mackerel, trout, sardine, herring, pilchard, halibut, sea bass

Lean Meats and Proteins – cottage cheese, whey isolates, egg whites, skim milk, skinless chicken/turkey breast, lean beef/veal/pork/lamb/buffalo

Complex Carbs – wholegrain oatmeal, oat bran, sweet potatoes, brown rice, wholemeal bread, yams, wholewheat pasta

Legumes and Pulses – kidney beans, lentils, peas, peanuts, soybeans, flax seeds

Spices – jalapeno, cayenne pepper, pepper, garlic, onion, ginger

Fruits – strawberries, blueberries, apples, kiwis, acai berries, oranges, grapefruit

Vegetables – bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, zucchini, green beans, spinach, asparagus

Healthy Fats – olive oil, canola oil, macadamia oil

These are some of the foods where you should get your calories from and which you should stick to religiously if you want to get rid of excess weight. For drinks, try to drink water and green tea as far as possible.

Making proper food choices alone won’t help you reach your goals. You still need to be active physically. For instance, do some jogging, brisk walking, cycling, aerobics, swimming or perform some bodyweight compound exercises like lunges, pull-ups, dips, squats, push-ups etc…With your quality nutrition and exercise regimen set in place and a consistent routine going on, there is no way you can’t shed those extra pounds off.

Potatoes have been getting a bad rap and some people call it a fattening food but this is actually a big myth. It’s not really the potatoes themselves which are the culprit but rather the methods in preparing them. One of the popular methods is deep frying to get those delicious french fries. And guess what? Deep frying isn’t healthy and french fries are fattening. Since french fries are so popular in fast food chains and many people eat them often and as you know fast food chains are linked to many health issues, potatoes have been automatically classified as a bad food. Even worst, many people believe potatoes are associated with weight gain issues and obesity as well.

Let’s dispel this myth once and for all. Potatoes are not a bad food. They are actually healthy depending how you prepare them. Always opt for baking, boiling, steaming and grilling instead of deep frying. Baked potatoes for instance have a medium Glycemic Index(GI) around 56 which makes them a good food. Foods with lower GI release energy gradually and do not spike your insulin levels followed by a crash later on, hence they are a great metabolism booster.

Potatoes are great source of carbohydrates for people involved in body building and can be eaten pre-workout and post-workout as well. Some bodybuilders often have lean steak with some baked potatoes for a meal. People who want to lose weight can also benefit from potatoes due to its medium GI and dietary fiber provided you leave the skin on. The skin also has valuable nutrients.

In addition, potatoes are not loaded with calories. A medium-size baked potato has only about 110 calories but it can keep hunger pangs at bay for some time. So this makes it a great weight loss food. To make it even more filling, just add a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil on your baked potatoes.

You can be creative with potatoes. Instead of doing baked, try some mashed potatoes. Here is a nice, simple, healthy and tasty recipe which you can try at home:

500 grams potatoes
3 garlic cloves
1 small onion
3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
3 branches of fresh coriander
2 eggs
Salt
Pepper

Step-by-step instructions

(1) Add potatoes in recipient with water and bring to boil. Be sure to wash the potatoes well first. Leave the skin on. Don’t peel as the skin has vitamins and minerals.

(2) Finely chop garlic and onions and lightly stir-fry them in 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Set aside.

(3) Finely chop coriander and leave aside.

(4) Hard boil the eggs, slice them and put aside.

(5) When potatoes are cooked, drain the water and place them in a big bowl. Use a potato masher to bring the potatoes to puree.

(6) Add the onions and garlic with the olive oil in the mashed potatoes. Mix.

(7) Add the fresh coriander. Mix.

(8) Add eggs. Mix.

(9) Add salt and pepper according to taste. Mix.

Ok, so anyone who knows me knows that when I make raw chocolates for myself, I usually end up making my beloved mainstay of cacao butter and powder, coconut oil, and peppermint. I’ve made all kinds, but the simply beauty of mint cacao has yet to be beaten. Well, then, why not add more mint? So glad I found this recipe!

Ingredients:

CHOCOLATE

1/2 cup melted cacao butter

1/2 cup melted coconut butter (for a firmer thin mint, sub coconut butter/oil with cacao butter)

1/2 cup maple syrup

1 1/2 cups cacao powder

sea salt to taste

MINT FILLING

3/4 cup dehydrated coconut

1 1/2 cups packed coconut meat

3 tbsp coconut butter/oil

1 tbsp maple syrup

1-2 packets of stevia

1 1/2 tsp mint extract

1/2 tsp spirulina (coloring agent)

salt to taste

Stir all chocolate ingredients together in a bowl that is placed over a large pot of hot water. Set aside. Blend all filling ingredients together until smooth. If need be, you may need to add a bit of water to keep contents in the blender moving. Prepare paper or silicone mini-baking cups, and line a miniature cupcake pan with them. Pour a small amount of chocolate in the bottom of each cup. Next, drop a small amount of the mint mixture on top of the chocolate layer. Cover mint mixture with more chocolate sauce. Once all cups have been poured, place in freezer to firm.

No, this one is not a fast and easy one, but looked to darned good not to include in what seems to be becoming a raw vegan ice kream fiesta for my blog. Plus you know it’s going to be good, as it’s from master chef Russel James.

Ingredients:

ICE CREAM

2 cups cashews

1/2 cup coconut butter/oil

1/4 cup agave nectar

1 vanilla pod

1 cup almond milk

1 tsp lemon juice

1/2 cup tightly-packed fresh mint leaves

FLORENTINES

1/2 cup cashews

3 tbsp cacao powder

1/4 cup melted cacao butter

1/2 tsp lemon juice

3 tbsp agave nectar

1/4 cup almond milk

1/4 cup cacao nibs

1/2 cup pistachio nuts, roughly chopped

Directions:

The almond milk you need for this recipe can be be made by blending 1c soaked almonds in 2c of pure water. You should then strain the mixture through a nut milk bag, or a sieve if you don’t have a nut milk bag. For the ice cream, scrape the inside of the vanilla pod, and discard the outer part. Alternatively, you can leave the outer part in water to infuse, making ‘vanilla water’. Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until smooth. Pour mixture into 4, round, equal-sized moulds and place in the freezer to set. You could use metal rings with plastic film stretched over the base of them.

For the Florentines, blend all ingredients, with the exception of the cacao nibs and pistachio nuts, in a high speed blender until smooth. Transfer mixture to a bowl and stir in the cacao nibs and pistachios. Use a spoon to form 8 Florentines (circles as big as the ice cream moulds you used) on some non-stick paper and place in the freezer to set. If you haven’t got enough room in your freezer to lay them out flat, you can put them in the fridge first, until they are firm enough to stack up in the freezer. Remove the ice cream and Florentines from the freezer 1 – 2 hours before serving. Assemble the sandwiches with one Florentine on the bottom, and one on the top, of the ice cream that you removed from the molds. Decorate the outside of the mint ice cream with some more chopped pistachio nuts.

Many people nowadays don’t like to make meals. It may seem an awful lot less difficult to put an instant, prepared meal in the cooker or perhaps microwave or simply to purchase from the nearest pizza outlet.

Sometimes, it can be quite amazing to find what actual materials are contained in ready foods, or in the takeaways which appear so handy and that youngsters often really like! It can also be surprising to work out just how much those meals cost, once you add together the amount of time and real money expended.

Frequently, the reasons people do not cook dinners for themselves as well as their families tend to be simply because (a) they really feel they don’t have the time and (b) they do not really know what to cook. Yet there are some quite simple, healthy dishes to choose from that you can check out on your household. A lot of simple items can quickly and easily be turned into tasty nutritious meals. And by the way – you’re saving yourself a lot of money. And if you’re concerned because of the dish washing- there’s very little!

Why don’t you have a shot at a simple meal along with your next takeaway, just to discover just how uncomplicated it can be? And if you would like to encourage yourself to accomplish something, be it to cook dinner regularly or to cultivate any other good habit – visit Freedupto figure out ways to getting yourself to do exactly what you want to achieve.

Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are a basic, filling dish, but still extremely tasty. Mashed potatoes can be served in many different ways and if you have some left over from one meal, they can be used up in a different way the following day.

Ingredients: Depending on your appetite, use about 2 medium potatoes for each person. You will also need salt and pepper to taste, a knob of butter and a little milk.

Method: Peel the potatoes, and cut them into slices. Put them in cold water until you are ready to use them. Place the pieces in a saucepan and pour boiling water over them to cover. Get the water back to the boil, decrease the heat until the water is just simmering and cook until the potato slices are tender (between 5 and 10 minutes, depending on the thickness of the slices). You can use a fork to check if the potatoes are done. There should be no resistance when it is pricked into the slices and it should come out again very easily. If the potatoes break up – they are overdone! But if the potatoes try to hold onto the fork, cook them a little longer. Drain the water off the potato slices and put the pan back on the hob at the lowest temperature, just to dry the potatoes a little. Add a knob of butter, a little milk and salt and pepper and mash the potatoes up using a potato masher. Serve with your meal.

WHAT IS WITHIN A WHEAT BERRY?

Included Inside of an unaltered whole wheat berry are the elements required to encourage growth. The protective casing on the wheat berry (also known as the bran) Is made up of fiber and nutrients. The starchy inside of the wheat berry is called the endosperm. As the seed germinates, the endosperm supplies it with nourishment until the plant can be maintained by its freshly grown root system. The embryo of the new plant is called the germ. Flour from commercially machined wheat has the germ and bran stripped from it, along with the connected nutrients. Legally, commercial suppliers are required to add three or four artificial in their retailed ‘enriched’ flour. Yet, eleven minerals and sixteen vitamins are found within a wheat berry.

THE SEED IS COMPLETE
The whole wheat grain arrives with strains of microorganisms that survive on whole grains. One gram of flour has around 13,000 yeast cells. Strong sourdough starters are populated by yeast cells which are designed to flourish off of grain. A starter doesn’t need to be exposed to the surrounding air to ‘catch’ untamed yeast. Uncovering your starter will only entice unwanted pests and bugs.

Sourdough starters consist of a balance of yeast and lactobacillus growing in a blend of flour and water. At room temperature the microorganisms are balanced, with yeast growing in a less rapid pace compared to lactobacillus. Cool storage decreases the rate of lactobacillus growth. As a rule of thumb, starters grow best in conditions between 65-85°F. In case you have a cooler residence, a starter might fare better resting close to a light bulb, near a warm, or atop your refrigerator. For residences that happen to be in warmer environments, the starter glass could rest inside a bowl of water to keep it cooler via evaporative cooling.

THE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP WITHIN A SOURDOUGH STARTER
Both yeast as well as lactobacilli take up residence inside a healthy sourdough starter whereas baker’s yeast contains only an isolated strain of yeast. Both of these microorganisms were designed to benefit one another symbiotically. Lactobacilli are anaerobic microorganisms that survive off of carbon dioxide. Yeast flourishes on the starch inside the endosperm and also creates carbon dioxide as a byproduct. The lactobacilli which have been enriched because of the carbon dioxide then stop unsafe bacteria from taking up residence in the starter.

Sourdough starters are merely containers that host this process and (in return for regular feeding) supply the bread maker a natural leavening agent.
